April is FDIC time, so training seems like an appropriate topic for this month’s newsletter article. Whether training is done at the company level, as a shift, or department it must be relevant and engaging. Fire fighters are hands on learners for the most part. We sit through lectures and at the end of it we retain about 20 percent of what we heard (Green, 2009). Using tools and putting what we are told into action increases our retention to 90 percent. Mixing both lecture and hands-on training can be very effective.
